The Jewish cemetery in Mühlhausen , the district town of the Unstrut-Hainich district in northwest Thuringia , was established in 1872. The Jewish cemetery , east of Eisenacher Strasse between Heinrich-Pfeiffer-Strasse and Martini-Schule, is a protected cultural monument .

history

The old Jewish cemetery in Mühlhausen can be traced back to 1417. It was located at the castle , to the west along the city wall. In 1900/01 the tombstones were transferred to the new cemetery and the area leveled, which today is largely preserved as a lawn.

In 1872 the Jewish community of Mühlhausen was given an area of ​​300 m² in the eastern area of ​​the communal cemetery. The burials began in the same year, the last burial was in 1944. Today there are 151 grave sites in the Jewish cemetery. Since the communal cemetery was closed and partially built over, the Jewish cemetery is located on the edge of a green area. He was desecrated several times in the 1970s and 1980s.
