Jürg von Känel (born May 13, 1951 in Reichenbach ; † January 6, 2005 there ) was a Swiss alpinist , sport climber , publisher and author .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a mechanic, he made the 1977 mountain guides training and has worked since then as a mountain guide. He became known for his many first ascents of difficult climbing routes in sport climbing areas in the Bernese Alps (including "Mission Miranda" in difficulty level 8c , 1990). In addition, he developed and rehabilitated countless alpine climbing routes and was also known for his series of climbing guides Plaisir , which he published in his own publishing house Filidor.

With these climbing guides he coined the term “ Plaisir climbing ”, in which the focus is not on athletic demands, but on enjoyment and the experience of the Alps. The routes described are consistently in the lower to medium level of difficulty and - in contrast to classic alpine routes - very well secured, so that alpine climbing can also be experienced for beginners. The term plaisir triggered a change in the protection of alpine climbing routes that has continued to this day and has long since exceeded the Swiss borders. The idea of plausibility is therefore one of the main reasons for the development of alpine climbing into a popular sport.

On January 6, 2005, shortly before the completion of his book Alpin Plaisir , Jürg von Känel committed suicide.
