Jürgen Engler (born May 14, 1945 in Dresden ) is a German cultural scientist .

Life

Engler studied German and cultural studies at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1972 on the subject of investigations into the relationship between the aesthetic and the moral, between art and morality: on the art-friendliness of socialist morality and the morality of socialist-realistic contemporary literature . He then worked as an editor for, among other things, Weltbühne and Sinn und Form . From 1995 to 2004 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine neue deutsche literature .

In addition to his work as a literary critic, he has since been active as an editor, including books of poetry. Engler is a member of the PEN Center Germany ; He lives in Berlin.
