Jürgen "Doc" Gerlach (actually Hans-Jürgen Gerlach; born November 17, 1946 ) is a German handball trainer . The orthopedic doctor achieved his greatest sporting success as a coach of the women's team at TV Lützellinden , which he led to several German championships and European Cup victories between 1980 and 2006.

Coaching

In 2002, Gerlach provided TV Lützellinden with more than 500,000 euros from his private assets as a loan. The association, which was already in financial difficulties at this point, was no longer able to cope with the debt burden. On June 1, 2005, a bankruptcy petition was filed against the association. However, at the beginning of September the District Court of Gießen refused to open the proceedings due to lack of funds. The liquidation of the association was thus decided. The liabilities, which could not be paid off in the end, amount to 774,000 euros, according to the former presidium, over 500,000 euros alone through the private loan from ex-trainer Gerlach.

Gerlach is a very polarizing personality for coaches and fans in women's handball. He is known for his direct way of expressing his opinion, occasionally with an insulting character. He referred to his colleague Maik Nowak several times as "Scheiß-Ossi", for which he apologized to the German Handball Federation - not to Nowak.

On the other hand, Gerlach ("With creativity he balances what others strive for through financial investments" and: "Lützellinden plays by far the best combination handball in the league") as an "extraordinary handball connoisseur" (Nowak), who already in 1995 "played the women's handball Year 2000 demonstrated "with" dizzyingly fast attacks and an aggressive cover operating well in front of the circle. "

At his last club, TV Mainzlar , he was aiming for a top position in the 2nd Bundesliga with eight former Lützellinder A youth players whom he led to the German championship in 2006 . On January 26, 2011, the team was withdrawn from the 2nd Bundesliga South.

In the 2011/2012 season he was briefly active as a coach of the men's team at TuS Holzheim in the Oberliga Hessen. He has not trained a club since then. From February 2014 he was sports director at the second division club TSG Ober-Eschbach . Then Gerlach said goodbye to handball.
