Jürgen Remane

Jürgen Remane (* 1934 in Kiel ; † 2004 ) was a German geologist and paleontologist . He was a professor at the Université de Neuchâtel .

Life

He was the son of the zoology professor Adolf Remane , earned his Abitur in 1954 in Plön and studied in Kiel, Grenoble and Tübingen, where he received his doctorate in 1962 under Otto Heinrich Schindewolf . He was with the Swedish geological service and assistant in Göttingen before moving to the Université de Neuchâtel in 1969, where he became a private lecturer in 1970, assistant professor in 1971 and professor in 1978.

He dealt with micropaleontology and used the Calpionella for the determination of the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary and biostratigraphy in the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous.

From 1992 to 1994 he was President of the Paleontological Society . He was Secretary General and later President of the International Stratigraphy Commission (ICS). In this role he was involved in the revision of the guidelines for the creation of stratigraphic standards (1996) and the publication of the first international stratigraphic survey (2000).

From 1997 he was editor of the Revue de la Société Géologique Suisse and from 1980 to 1982 President of the Société Neuchàteloise des Sciences Naturelles.
