Jüri Saska

Jüri Saska (born August 20, 1974 in Adavere ) is an Estonian naval officer. Since February 2017 he has been the commander of the Estonian Naval Forces .

Life

Jüri Saska was born in 1974 in Adavere, a village in what is now Jõgeva County in what was then the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1992 he graduated from high school in nearby Põltsamaa .

Military career

Promotions

From 1993 to 1994, Jüri Saska did his military service with the newly established Estonian Navy. He then decided to continue with the naval forces and attended an officer training course in Sweden.

As an officer, he initially served on board various ships, but increasingly specialized in mine control and attended training in Belgium in 2000. From 2002 to 2005 he was in command of the mine-hunting boat Sulev and in 2004 he attended the Karlberg Military Academy in Stockholm for postgraduate studies. He was then from 2005 to 2006 commander of the then Estonian flagship Admiral Pitka . He then worked on the naval staff until 2008.

As a staff officer , Saska took on various management tasks in the Estonian Navy over the next few years (commander of the naval base, chief of staff and chief of the fleet). As of February 1, 2017, he was appointed Commander of the Naval Forces after his predecessor Sten Sepper resigned on board a naval ship due to customs offenses. In this post he was promoted to sea captain (Estonian: mereväekapten ) in February 2017 and to flotilla admiral (Estonian: kommodoor ) in February 2020 .

Private

Jüri Saska is married and has two children (a daughter and a son). In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English and Swedish .
