J. Gordon Melton
John Gordon Melton (born September 19, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama ) is an American religious scholar .
Melton founded the Institute for the Study of American Religion and teaches at the University of California, Santa Barbara . He has published more than 25 books, including several reference works on Religions in the United States and New Religious Movements .
