JBuilder was a Java - development environment the company CodeGear (formerly to Borland belonging to since 2008 Embarcadero Technologies ), which was written entirely in Java. There was a free version (Foundation) for download, which could also be used for commercial purposes and already enabled graphical GUI creation, but was inferior in scope to the paid Developer and Enterprise editions.

Furthermore, the Borland C ++ BuilderX (not to be confused with C ++ Builder ) was based on the JBuilder code, which achieved extensive platform independence.

With the introduction of the JBuilder 2007 version, the product had changed significantly. It was no longer an independent IDE, but simply a plug-in for the Eclipse framework . While this product represented a functional extension for new customers who have worked with Eclipse, the previous users had to get used to it a lot and in some cases had to forego the basic functions of the editor that they had come to love. Furthermore, some of the existing GUI classes that were created in the Borland “UI Designer” could no longer be edited in the “Visual Editor” of the new version.

JBuilder was later released in 2008. This was offered in two paid versions, the Professional and the Enterprise Edition. A version with limited functionality was available under the name JBuilder 2008 Turbo.

JBuilder 2008 was also based on the Eclipse framework and brought numerous new functions:

  • collaborative team support
  • UML modeling functions with LiveSource technology
  • improved code profiling (both static and dynamic analysis of the code)
  • Application factories
  • extensive collection of tools for the construction of user interfaces
  • Development of visual Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) and accelerated creation of web services

JBuilder must be considered discontinued, all references have been deleted from the Embacadero website.
