JCall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JCall is a call to European Jews for "Peace and Reason" in the Middle East . This initiative was modeled on the US organization J Street .

History of origin

The organization was founded on May 3, 2010 in Brussels . The founding chairman is David Chemla , the head of Shalom Achschaw in France. The founding fathers include Zeev Sternhell (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), the former Israeli ambassador to France, Eli Bar-Navi , and the former Israeli ambassador to Germany, Avi Primor , and Daniel Cohn-Bendit (MEP). The French signatories include: a. the philosopher Alain Finkielkraut , among the English the criminologist David Nelken . A German section was launched in September 2010. Micha Brumlik (Frankfurt) is one of its initiators , the first chairman is Rabbi Tovia Ben-Chorin (Berlin).

aims

The organization sees the danger of delegitimizing Israel through the occupation and the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem. It was therefore decided to act on the following basis:

  • Principle "two states for two peoples"
  • Europe's responsibility for a sensible settlement of the conflict
  • Warning against systematic identification with the policies of the Israeli government
  • European movement which stands above traditional disagreements.

JCall's first action was an “Appeal to Reason” petition addressed to the European Parliament.

Delimitations

JCall differentiates itself in different directions. Founding member of the German section Micha Brumlik emphasized in 2010 that the organization wanted to show a path “that a majority of Jews can support”. With regard to European Jews for a Just Peace - another Jewish interest group that deals with the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis - he does not understand "how one can cooperate with a terrorist organization like Hamas ". JCall Germany, on the other hand, distinguishes itself "from many - not all - chairmen of Jewish communities in Germany who are of the opinion that criticism of Israeli government policy would weaken the country". This corresponds to the criticism of JCall from two sides, especially in France.
