The Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) has been dedicated to Japanese-German and international cooperation since 1985 and is particularly involved in the fields of science, culture and business. The non-profit foundation's activities range from scientific conferences and cultural events to exchange programs, Japanese courses and an open house.

The focus of the JDZB is on scientific conferences, of which the JDZB holds around 20 annually on its own or with cooperation partners, some of them in Japan and other countries. The main topics are long-term political, economic and social developments; reference is made to current events such as B. the NPT conference, the biodiversity conference or the climate conference in Bonn.

The foundation is financed in equal parts by the German and Japanese sides. In addition, the JDZB is dependent on funds from partners and sponsors for the implementation of its projects.

history

The foundation was established in 1985 at the suggestion of the then heads of government of the Federal Republic of Germany and Japan, Helmut Kohl and Nakasone Yasuhiro . Since the two countries were very interested in each other at that time, a foundation was set up to promote dialogue and cooperation between countries, cultures, between scientists, entrepreneurs and artists.

In November 1983 the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the Japanese Prime Minister NAKASONE Yasuhiro decided to found a forum for European-Japanese encounters. On the sidelines of the economic summit in London in 1984, the two heads of government finally agreed to set up a German-Japanese mixed commission, which met in Berlin and Tôkyô in autumn of the same year. This commission worked out the cornerstones for an agreement, which was signed on March 1, 1985. The Japanese-German Center Berlin Foundation (JDZB) was set up on January 15, 1985. The building of the former Japanese embassy on Tiergartenstrasse was restored for this purpose. After the Bundestag decided to move its seat of government from Bonn to Berlin, the Japanese embassy decided to move back into its embassy building. For this reason, the JDZB was looking for a new building and found it in Dahlem , where it has been operating since 1998.

tasks

The task of the Japanese-German Center Berlin is set out in its deed of foundation, namely “to promote and deepen Japanese-German and international cooperation in the fields of science and culture. […], Especially by supporting the Japanese-German understanding at all levels of economic life to improve cooperation in science, research and culture. ”The focus is not only on bilateral relations, but also on the entire Asia-Pacific region and the countries of Europe as well as the integration of Japan and Germany in international institutions and issues.

Conferences and events

The JDZB offers a forum for scientific exchange in the form of conferences, workshops and lectures. At these events, experts from business, science, politics or culture can enter into a dialogue, exchange ideas about long-term developments or current problems in both countries and form perspectives and networks together. Each year the JDZB organizes around 20 of its own and cooperation projects, some of them in Japan and other countries. Topics are taken up that are important for both countries - without being limited to Japan and Germany. Depending on the question, participants from other European or Asian countries are also included.

Exchange programs

The JDZB oversees six German-Japanese exchange programs for different target groups. The focus is on the offspring for German-Japanese relations such as B. young professionals, future executives or young researchers. The dialogue between the young experts from both countries is promoted by subject-specific programs, mutual understanding is conveyed and suggestions are given for their own work.

Exhibitions and concerts

With its cultural offerings, the JDZB is primarily aimed at an interested public in Berlin and also promotes exchange between the two countries. The events include concerts, exhibitions, readings, lectures, film screenings and theater performances in a Japanese-German context. The best known series are the Dahlem Music Evenings, where Japanese and international artists give concerts. At the annual open day there is Japanese “culture you can touch”. Overall, the cultural offer is dedicated to both classical and current topics and brings people together through art, music and literature.

Japanese courses

The JDZB offers courses in Japanese as a foreign language for beginners and advanced learners. The learning content is conveyed using the JaFIX methodology (Japanese as a foreign language with integrative-communicative steps), which uses common and alternative didactic methods that are intended to convey learning more permanently and more easily. The language courses last one year and are divided into the levels of difficulty basic, intermediate and advanced. There is also a working group “Interpreting German-Japanese”.

The library

The library at the JDZB has around 10,000 volumes in its inventory, around 60% of which are in Japanese. In addition to reference works, dictionaries and statistical data collections, there are also publications on the economy, politics, society and culture of ancient and modern Japan. One focus is literature on German-Japanese relations and research on Japan. Lending and online research are possible.

Bodies

The Japanese-German Center Berlin is a non-profit foundation under private law. Its committees consist of the entire Board of Management and the Board of Trustees. Both have equal numbers of Japanese and German representatives and meet annually alternately in Germany and Japan. These meetings are preceded by government consultations on the contribution of both countries to the annual budget of the JDZB.

Publications

The newsletter of the Japanese-German Center Berlin "jdzb echo" appears quarterly in German, English and Japanese and offers information about the activities and events of the foundation in the past and the coming months. The JDZB documents its events in various publications: In the book series “jdzb documentation”, which is published by Iudicium-Verlag in Munich, scientific conferences are documented in the conference languages; the publications are only available in bookshops. In the series “Publications of the JDZB”, conferences are documented in the form of occasional papers; the publications can be obtained directly from the JDZB.
