The vehicles of the series C60 ( Japanese C60 形 蒸 気 機関 車 , C60-gata jōki kikansha , dt. "Steam locomotive type C60") of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 2'C2 '("Hudson").
The 47 locomotives were built from 1953 to 1961 by converting redundant 2'C1 '("Pacific") locomotives of the C59 series in the JNR works in Hamamatsu and Kōriyama . 39 locomotives were converted from the pre-war C59 and were given the operating numbers 1 to 39, while a further eight from the post-war C59 were given the operating numbers 101 to 108. As electrification progressed, a lower axle load became more important than pure tractive power, the new C60 series received an additional running axle in order to reduce the high axle load of the C59 and enable a larger area of application.
The series was mainly used in passenger train operations in the Tōhoku and Kyūshū regions . But they could also be seen in double or even triple traction together with the series C61 and D51 in front of both passenger and freight trains north of Morioka on the Tōhoku main line.
The last C60 was taken out of service in 1971. Only one locomotive remains today, the C60 1 in Sakuragaoka Park in Sendai .
