The class D51 locomotives ( Japanese 国 鉄 D51 形 蒸 気 機関 車 , Kokutetsu D51-gata Jōki kikansha , about "steam locomotive of the D51 series of the state railway") were narrow-gauge steam locomotives of the Japanese state railway . A total of 1115 units were built for these from 1936, more for areas occupied by Japan and in 1951 the last two machines for Korea on behalf of the UN forces in the Korean War . The modern two-cylinder superheated steam locomotives with the axle formula 1'D1 'were designed for mixed service in front of passenger and freight trains on main lines. The last examples were not taken out of service until the end of the Japanese steam locomotive era in 1975.
Like most Japanese steam locomotives, they were designed by the chief developer of the state railways, Hideo Shima.
The locomotives that remained on Sakhalin were given the designation Д51 ( D51 ) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD).
history
The completely newly developed locomotives were conceptually based on the D50 series of the Japanese State Railways , which was procured in the 1920s , but turned out to be significantly larger and more powerful. Their designation goes back to the series scheme in Japan and explains the letter D for four driven axles, the numbers 5 and 1 are the series number. In Japan, the series designation is pronounced separately as デ ゴ イ チ , "De-go-ichi" ("D-five-one"). With the JNR , the series and serial number were separated by a space, with the SŽD with a hyphen. In the case of the four-digit serial number, the JNR was not separated from the series designation for reasons of space. The early machines with 14 bar boiler pressure are externally recognizable by the common cladding of all domes and were called D51s , for this design the nickname "Namekuji" ("nudibranch") quickly became established. The series version was given a normal boiler design with a pressure increased to 15 bar.
A striking feature of all locomotives are the spoked wheels and the boxpok drive wheels . Some examples of the D51 series received Giesl ejectors around 1960 .
A locomotive, the D51-22, is on display at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk station as a memorial. Another machine, the D51-4 , is in working condition at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk depot and transports special trains there.
The machines also ran in Taiwan , where they stayed after the island came under the control of the Chinese government . They were given the designation DT 650 .
Received vehicles
In addition to the vehicles mentioned, many vehicles have survived in Japan . The locomotives D51 200 of the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum Kyōto and the D51 498 of the JR East in the Takasaki depot are currently operational . The stationary exhibits include the D51745 machines in Hiroshima , the D51187 in Ehime Prefecture and the D51 488 on the premises of the Wako Museum in Yasugi .
