JOULES

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The JOULES project (Joint Operation for Ultra Low Emission Shipping) is a Europe-wide research measure with the aim of investigating and significantly reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful emissions from ships . Companies from the European shipping industry and European universities are involved in the project .

Duration and funding

The project consortium consists of 38 partners from industry and science from ten European countries. The project, which runs from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2017, is funded by the European Union as part of the 7th Research Framework Program with 8.5 million euros. It is coordinated by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft .

The project will be carried out in five main phases. The milestones in between are result points in the project. The results achieved up to the milestones support the decision-making processes for the following work steps. Each of the JOULES working groups is involved in the individual phases with specific results and services.

aims

With the simulation tool , the energy-relevant effects of the various types of ships on the environment are to be mapped and examined. The construction of the ships is to be assessed from an economic and environmentally relevant point of view in order to design, construct, build and operate the next generation of ships from an energetically optimal point of view. The decisive factor is the environmental impact of the overall ship system, because in the future (long-term goals 2025 and 2050) new concepts and holistic approaches to design and construction will be required in order to meet the requirements of geopolitical goals with regard to the environment.

As part of the project, eleven applications for five types of ship ( ferry , cruise ship , work ship , offshore ship and cargo ship ) are to be investigated and optimized. CO 2 emission reductions of around 23% on average in the 2025 scenario and around 50% in the 2050 scenario are to be achieved. The other exhaust emissions such as SO x , NO x and particles should also be reduced as far as possible.
