Pulmonary adenomatosis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pulmonary or Jaagsiekte is a by retroviruses caused chronic infectious disease of the lungs in sheep , rarely in goats , which is characterized by nodular changes in the lungs. It occurs increasingly ( endemic ) in certain areas and is fatal. In Switzerland there is a reporting obligation for this animal disease .

Pathogen

The causative agent of pulmonary adenomatosis, the Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus , is a beta retrovirus . Excretion takes place via lung secretions and is transmitted to the air ( aerogenic ) via aerosols .

Clinical picture

The incubation period is one to five years. The first symptoms are accelerated breathing ( tachypnea ) and an occasional attack-like wet cough. In the further course there is shortness of breath ( dyspnea ), watery discharge from the eyes and nose and emaciation if the appetite is preserved. If an animal is lifted by its hind legs, more frothy liquid flows out of the nose.

In the differential diagnosis , bacterial pneumonia, maedi and lungworm infestation can be excluded.

The diagnosis can be made as suspicious based on the clinical picture. A direct or indirect ( antibody ) virus detection can take place from lung secretions, which is obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage . Pathologically and anatomically, poorly collapsed lung areas and gray, sharply demarcated nodes ( adenocarcinomas ) are evident .

Combat

A treatment or vaccination is not possible. The control is therefore aimed at building populations free of lung adenomatosis.
