Jaak Jõerüüt (born December 9, 1947 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer , politician and diplomat.

education

After graduating from high school in 1966, Jaak Jõerüüt graduated from the Tallinn Polytechnic in 1973 with a degree in economics . From 1970 to 1976 he was an editor at various newspapers, publishers and libraries before he was employed by the Estonian SSR Writers' Union from 1977 to 1989 . In 1989/90 he was briefly Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia.

diplomat

When Estonian independence was regained, Jaak Jõerüüt joined the Estonian diplomatic service. He held the following positions:

  • 1998–2002 Estonian Ambassador to Italy (co-accredited in Malta and Cyprus).
  • 2006–2011 Estonian Ambassador to Latvia .
  • 2011–2014 Estonian Ambassador to Sweden .

From 2002 to 2004 he was an inspector at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In July 2004 he was appointed Estonian representative to the United Nations .

Politician

Jaak Jõerüüt was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1977-1989. From November 2004 to October 2005, Jaak Jõerüüt was a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Reformierakond ) in the cabinets of Prime Minister Juhan Parts and Andrus Ansip Defense Minister of the Republic of Estonia . After the resignation of Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland , he took over the office of Foreign Minister from February 11 to 21, 2005.

Jaak Jõerüüt is one of the most outstanding contemporary Estonian writers. He feels particularly committed to humanism . He is a member of the Estonian Writers' Union and the Estonian PEN Club.

Works

His first publication were poems in 1975. So far, a total of: a two-volume novel ( Raisakullid 1982-85), memoirs from his stay in Rome, 6 volumes of short stories, 4 volumes of poetry and 2 children's books.

In 1980 and 1991 he received the Tuglas Prize for best story for his works . 1983 the Smuul Prize (for children's books). In 1988 the journalism award of the magazine Sirp followed and in 2003 the annual award of the literary magazine Looming .

Private life

Jaak Jõerüüt is married to the poet and writer Viivi Luik (* 1946).
