Friedebert Tuglas Novella Prize

The Friedebert-Tuglas-Novellenpreis is an Estonian literary prize that was founded by Friedebert Tuglas in 1969 and is awarded on March 2nd of each year for the two best Estonian novellas of the previous year.

History of origin

In February 1969, Friedebert Tuglas told Paul Rummo that he wanted 10,000 rubles from his private fortune to be made available for a novella prize. In view of the not very high endowment sum in his eyes, he said: “You know that the Finnish Writers' Association nominated me for the Nobel Prize together with Under . Of course that won't work, but if this miracle happens, then this money would also flow into the foundation's sum for the award. ”Initially, the matter got stuck in the machinery of the Soviet bureaucracy, which apparently did not know how to deal with such a precedent. After a year of radio silence, the sick and embittered Tuglas withdrew his offer, disappointed. Thereupon he received important visits from various officials who changed the mind of the author, so that the prize could be awarded for the first time on March 2, 1971, Tuglas' 85th birthday. The jury met at Tuglas's request at his home. After the selection of the first two winners, Jaan Kross and Paul Kuusberg , Tuglas said that he too would have voted for the novella by Jaan Kross, which, however, did not know Paul Kuusberg's.

The original endowment of the prize was 600 (1st prize) and 400 (2nd prize) rubles. Today, however, two equal prizes are awarded each year and the authors are always named in alphabetical order. The jury is appointed annually by the Estonian Writers' Association and the Estonian Academy of Sciences .
