Jaan Kikas
Jaan Kikas , also Johannes "Juhan" Kikkas , (born June 5, 1892 in Walk , Livonia , † March 9, 1944 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian weightlifter .
Athletic performance
Jaan Kikas started lifting weights in 1921. He was only fourth at the World Championships in Tallinn in 1922, but was able to improve his performance in the coming months. At the championships in Gothenburg the following year, Kikas was second in the light heavyweight division .
Kikas won the bronze medal in the middleweight division (up to 75 kg) at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris at the age of 32 . In this competition he set a new world record in pushing in his third attempt with 127.5 kg. The silver medal went to Kikas' compatriot Alfred Neuland . It was the only time that two Estonians won a medal at the Olympic Games in the same competition.
In 1925, Kikas became Estonian weightlifting champion. He was killed in the devastating Soviet air raid on Tallinn on March 9, 1944.
