Jack Butler (musician)

Jack "Jacques" Butler (born April 29, 1909 , † 2003 ) was an American jazz trumpeter and singer .

Life

Butler grew up in Washington, DC before moving to New York City in the late 1920s . There he played with Cliff Jackson and Horace Henderson ; Recordings were made in 1936 for Bluebird Records with Willie Bryant ( Moonrise in the Lowlands ). He then moved to Europe, where he mostly worked with Willie Lewis (1936–1939). At the beginning of the Second World War he was in Norway. After his return to New York in 1940 he led his own band and played a. a. with Mezz Mezzrow and Art Hodes . In 1946 he recorded under his own name for Aladdin with Mercer Ellington ( She's Got the Blues for Sale ). In 1948 he worked in Toronto , in 1950 he moved again to Europe and had a long-term engagement with his own ensemble in the Parisian nightclub La Cigale . In 1961 he appeared in the music film Paris Blues . The saxophonist Benny Waters was part of his band at La Cigale for many years until he took over in 1967. In addition, Butler worked again with Mezz Mezzrow. In 1968 he returned to New York and continued to perform there.
