Life
Jack Scott was born in Canada in 1936, but grew up in a suburb of Detroit since he was ten . There he developed a taste for rural country music. At the age of 18 he formed his first band, the Southern Drifters. After leading the group for three years, Scott was signed by ABC-Paramount in 1957 . It was the time of rockabilly, and so Scott also tried this new music, which actually comes from the rural southern states .
His first single Baby, She's Gone / You Can Bet Your Bottom Dollar , was released in April 1957 and was accompanied by the same background band that later recorded his first hit. He also received support from the Chantones, a background choir that played a not insignificant role in Scott's success. His first single and his second record, Two Timin 'Woman , did not make it into the charts, although they sold well regionally. Scott left ABC Paramount the following year.
Scott had met Joe Carlton in 1957, who was a producer for ABC but was now starting his own label, Carlton Records . Scott went with him, and his first record was a hit. The A-side, the ballad My True Love , reached number three on the national charts, while the back, the rockabilly title Leroy , reached number eleven. The single also became a hit in the UK , and Scott continued to have hits with Carlton for the next several years. It is worth mentioning, for example, Goodbye Baby , which reached eighth place. Shortly after the song was released, Scott was drafted into the US Army , where he served a year.
In 1959, Scott moved to Top Rank Records, where he had his next hit in 1960 with What in the World's Come Over You (No. 5), followed by Burning Bridges at No. 3. These two singles were his last big hits. In 1961 he signed with Capitol Records , but could only come up with small hits. For the next few years he continued to record country ballads or rock-oriented pieces, all of which only came to the bottom of the charts.
In 1974 he had his last hit on Dot Records with You're Just Gettin 'Better . It was the only time Scott got on the country charts. His previous hits had all found themselves on the national pop charts, although his ballads were heavily country-oriented. During the 1980s and 1990s, Scott began performing at rockabilly festivals, which he continued into old age. Concerts also took him to Europe, including the Hemsby Rock'n'Roll Weekend. In 2015 Jack Scott released an album with 13 tracks: 12 new and one newly recorded track.
Scott last lived in Detroit. On December 6, 2019, the singer suffered a heart attack from the consequences of which he died in hospital on December 12.
