Jackie Denver (* 1926 in Lurgan ; † July 21, 2013 there ) was a Northern Irish football player.

Life

Denver began his career with the Shankill Young Mens in his hometown of Lurgan. Peter O'Connor and Johnny Leathem , who regularly passed his house after training, convinced him to move to their club Belfast Celtic , where he was initially in the reserve and a. played with Charlie Tully and Kevin McGarry . He later played in the 1940s as a striker for the team that garnered titles under Elisha Scott . After the "Windsor Riot" on Boxing Day 1948, in which Jimmy Jones was broken a leg in heavy crowd riots on the field, the team withdrew from the league for safety reasons. Denver toured the United States with Belfast Celtic for a year and then moved to Glenavon FC . There he was part of a legendary trio called "Three Muskateers" with Wilbur Cush and Jimmy Jones and participated in the club's most successful era. Glenavon became the first club from outside Belfast to win the Northern Irish League in 1951/52.

Denver compared his time at Belfast and Glenavon as follows: “Celtic never thought of losing. When I was at Glenavon we had a good team, but we had to play the full game, unconditionally, to win something. At Celtic it was always just a question of how much we win. "

Unlike Cush and Jones, Denver never played for the national team. Malcom Brodie and Gordon Hanna considered him the best Northern Irish player who was never nominated internationally. Brodie also thought Jones and Denver were a perfect duo, they went together like "Scotch and water".

Private

Denver was married; his wife Patsy died a few years before him. The couple had three children and six grandchildren. Shortly before his death, Denver gifted some of his Belfast Celtic victory medals to young fan Jay Beatty .
