Jackie Gibson

Jackie Gibson (actually Henry Alfred Gibson; born March 31, 1914 in Johannesburg , † January 15, 1944 in Eshowe ) was a South African long-distance runner who had his greatest successes in the marathon .

In 1935 he was South African marathon champion in 2:52:41 h. The following year he was national runner-up in 2:32:09 h and qualified for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, where he was eighth in 2:38:04 h.

In 1937 he won the national title again with the Commonwealth record of 2:30:45 h. At the British Empire Games in Sydney in 1938 , he won bronze in the marathon and was sixth over six miles . The following year he was South African marathon champion for the third time and runner-up in 1940 for the second time.

In 1935 he was South African champion over ten miles and in 1940 over six miles.

At the age of 29, he died in a plane crash while serving in the South African Air Force . The Jackie Gibson Marathon has been held in Johannesburg in his honor since 1946 .
