Jacob Henri de Leeuw

Jacob Henri de Leeuw (* 1929; † February 23, 2012 ) was an aircraft engineer from the Netherlands who held a professorship at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) and was temporarily its director.

Life

Jacob Henri de Leeuw, also known as Jaap de Leeuw, was a classmate of Anne Frank in Amsterdam . He had two siblings named Ans and Betty.

In the early 1950s de Leeuw was still at the Engineering School in Delft , where he received his diploma, but in December 1951 he submitted a paper at the Georgia Institute of Technology entitled The Normal Component of the Induced Velocity near a Vortex Ring and Its Application to Lifting Rotor Problems to achieve a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. In 1953, at the same institute, a work on The Normal Component of the Induced Velocity in the Vicinity of a Lifting Rotor and Some Examples of Its Application followed , which he carried out together with Walter Castles jr. had created. He later moved to the University of Toronto, where he submitted his doctoral thesis The Interaction of a Plane Strong Shock Wave with a Steady Magnetic Field in 1958 . In the 1960s he became a Fellow of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.

With his wife Susanna, geb. Croft, he had a son and two daughters.
