Jacob Josef Nelles

Jacob Josef Nelles (born January 2, 1818 in Cologne , † January 27, 1887 in Cologne) was a German cathedral building rendant in Cologne.

Life

Nelles came from an old hatmaker family in Cologne , but did not carry on the family tradition. When the Central Dombau-Verein held its constituent meeting in 1842, supported by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. And numerous prominent Cologne citizens, Nelles was a member from the very beginning and was the association's full-time financial administrator.

The aim of the association was to push ahead with the completion of the construction project Cologne Cathedral , which had been inactive for 300 years . For 38 years, Jacob Josef Nelles worked to secure the financing for this. Jacob Josef Nelles' life's work was crowned with the celebration of the completion of Cologne Cathedral on October 15, 1880 in the presence of the imperial couple and representatives of almost all German royal houses. For his services to Cologne Cathedral, he received the Prussian Order of the Crown, 3rd Class, after having been awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class on October 7, 1855 .
