Jacob van Moppes

Jacob van Moppes (born August 18, 1876 in Amsterdam , † March 26, 1943 in the Sobibor extermination camp ) was a Dutch wrestler .

Jacob van Moppes was a butcher by profession and came into contact with strength athletes a lot through his job , which gave him an interest in this sport himself. He hardly missed a fight, whether as a participant, trainer or official. In 1908 he started at the Olympic Games in London in the Greco-Roman style , weight class lightweight (up to 66 kilograms). He was eliminated in the first round.

In 1903 van Moppes was co-founder of the Nederlandse Krachtsport Bond (NKB) , member of the board for three years and until 1925 chairman of the district of Amsterdam and the surrounding area of ​​the NKB. For almost 50 years he was also chairman of the Amsterdamse Krachtsportvereniging KDO (Kracht door Oefening, dt. = Strength through training) . In 1940, after the bombing of Rotterdam , he campaigned for the strength athletes there who had lost their houses to be supported.

On March 26, 1943, Jacob van Moppes, who was of Jewish origin, was murdered together with his wife Sissy in the Sobibor extermination camp .
