Jacquemart Island is one of the Campbell Islands , a group of small sub-Antarctic islands off the New Zealand- owned Campbell Island in the southern Pacific Ocean .

geography

The 740 m long and up to 450 m wide island is located 1000 m south-southwest of Monument Harbor off the south coast of Campbell Island . It rises up to 250  m from the sea with its steeply sloping rocks . 210 m northeast of Jacquemart Island are two smaller rock islands, which are called La Botte and off the southern tip of the island is another, but nameless rock island at a distance of 145 m.

geology

Jacquemart Island is made up of basalt rock. The island was formed by erosion and was originally part of the former volcano that formed Campbell Island in the late Cenozoic .

Flora and fauna

The island is covered with up to 60 cm high tussock (Poa foliosa) and up to 1.4 m high tussock (Poa litorosa) as well as macquarie cabbage (Stilbocarpa polaris). Occurring in pillow shape Colobanthus muscoides and mats of Crassula moschata can be found on the island.

On November 9, 1997, a population of Campbell's snipe (Coenocorypha aucklandica perseverance) believed to be extinct was discovered on the island. Since rats brought in by Europeans on Campbell Island plundered the birds' clutch and thus prevented offspring, the birds were long considered extinct. After Campbell Island was cleared of rats by the Department of Conservation in 2010 , the birds were able to resettle there.

Also on Jacquemart Iceland populations of petrels , like the sooty shearwater (Puffinus griseus) and the Gray-backed storm petrel , diving petrel , Brown Skua (Stercorarius skua lonnbergi) and a type of prions (Pachyptila sp.) Found.

World natural heritage

As part of the Campbell Islands, the island now belongs to in 1998 recognized UNESCO - World Heritage in which the sub-Antarctic island groups The Snares , Bounty Islands , Antipodes Islands , Auckland Islands and Campbell Island group have received protection status pronounced.
