Jacques Brotchi

Jacques Brotchi (born August 11, 1942 in Liège ) is a Belgian neurosurgeon and politician .

Life

Brotchi completed his medical studies at the University of Liège in 1967 and then specialized in neurosurgery with Professor Joël Bonnal, whose deputy he was until 1981. In 1981 he was commissioned to set up the neurosurgery department of the Erasmus hospital of the Université Libre de Bruxelles , which he headed until 2007. He was also a professor at the ULB, where he held the chair of neurosurgery until his retirement in October 2007.

From 1997 to 2001 he headed the working group for training of the World Association of Neurosurgeons (WFNS). Here he was particularly committed to improving technical teaching in developing countries . He was president of the Belgian Society for Neurosurgery and the “Société de Neurosurgery de Langue Française” whose field of activity includes all French-speaking countries.

From June 2005 he was appointed chairman of the World Association of Neurosurgeons for a period of four years. He has received numerous Belgian and international awards, for example he is a member of the French Académie nationale de chirurgie , the American Academy of Neurological Surgery (AANS), which made him an “Honorary Member” in 2004 - the highest award this institution has not given since 1997 - as well as a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Political career

After being co-opted into the Belgian Senate , he primarily campaigned for medical issues. He founded the Senate Commission for Bioethics and was the originator of an intense Senate debate on passive smoking with the aim of banning smoking in restaurants and sports canteens.

In 2006, 2012 and 2018 he was elected to the city council of his place of residence, Uccle . In July 2007 he was confirmed as a member of the Belgian Senate for a second legislative period (2007-2011) . Jacques Brotchi was President of the Belgian Senate from December 14, 2018 to July 4, 2019.
