Jacques Heyman

Jacques Heyman (born March 8, 1925 ) is a British civil engineer, emeritus professor of structural engineering at the University of Cambridge .

Heyman studied mathematics at Cambridge University from 1941 , but soon switched to civil engineering. He graduated in 1944 and was then called up to work on jet engines. In 1946 he went back to Cambridge University as an assistant to John Baker . He received his doctorate in 1949 and went to Brown University as a post-doctoral student to William Prager , where he stayed for three years and returned again in 1956. In 1956 he was an assistant lecturer and demonstrator in Cambridge. In 1963 he accepted a position at Oxford for a short time, but withdrew his acceptance immediately after it became clear that his chair was insufficiently funded. In 1971 he became a reader and eventually a professor at Cambridge. 1983 to 1992 he was head of the faculty. He has also been visiting professor at the University of Florence several times .

Like his teacher Baker, he endeavored to transfer knowledge of plasticity theory from steel construction (which Heyman had also dealt intensively with and wrote basic textbooks with Baker) to solid construction. The investigation of the plastic borderline case in the load-bearing behavior of stone buildings also led him to investigate the structural analysis of historical buildings such as cathedrals, for which he became a recognized expert. He also wrote several specialist books about it, including historical considerations in his statics textbooks. He also reissued Charles Augustin de Coulomb's treatise on structural engineering . In 1971 he was responsible for the renovation of the west tower of Ely Cathedral .

In 2008 he received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
