Jadrankamen dd Jadransko more (short: Jadran, Croatian Adriatic Sea (short: Adria)), Kamen (Croatian stone) is a Croatian stonemason company headquartered in Pucišca, Croatia . JadranKamen specializes in the mining, processing and distribution of special natural stones . The company was founded in 1902 as the successor to the cooperative stonemasons association. In 1995 the Croatian tennis player Bruno Orešar bought the company and developed it into one of the leading stonemasons in Europe.

Limestone of the island of Brac

The most important limestone quarries are off the coast of southern Croatia on the 480 km² island of Brač . The main focus of mining is on the southern part of the island. Limestone has been mined here for hundreds of years. The most striking optical property of these limestones, which were formed during the Upper Cretaceous through mineral deposits and petrified marine organisms, is their clear, almost white color.

Quarries and workshops

The company has a total of 15 quarries in Croatia. Different types of limestone are extracted in 10 quarries on the island of Brac. On the mainland there are 5 more quarries where primarily darker stones are extracted. Above all, the almost white and ivory-colored limestone from the island are considered to be the company's important varieties. Furthermore, limestones with other structures are mined, which have different brown and red color nuances.

A total of 18 different types of natural stone are processed in three modern sawmills (two on the island of Brac, another near Split ). Due to the differentiated sediment petrographic properties of the natural stone types and the resulting strength values as well as a mostly low water absorption capacity, some types are compared with marble in commercial product presentations .

The company works with modern sawing and grinding machines, has diamond chain saws and diamond-studded wire saws , which are mainly used in the cutting process of mechanically very resistant types of stone.

Economic use

The ancient Romans recognized the usefulness and quality of the limestone on the island of Brac. One of the first buildings from this time is the Diocletian's Palace in Split, which the Roman Emperor Diocletian had built in 295 AD. The limestones later found their way to the USA, in 1824 the limestone pillars in the central area of the building were added to the White House in Washington DC. Furthermore, white limestone from the island of Brac is used on the Vienna Parliament Building , the Governor's Palace in Trieste and the Budapest Parliament Building .

A large part of the 75,000 tons of limestone mined each year remains in Croatia, only around 25% is intended for export, mainly to Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia and Austria.

Stone processing

First and foremost, the stone blocks are processed in the factories to make sizes and weights ready for dispatch. Different sizes of unprocessed blocks or cuboid formats are offered. Furthermore, blocks are processed into commercially available panels in various thicknesses. But cladding and tiles are also produced. The limestone is processed in different finishes, so it can be ground, brushed or polished.

In addition to mining and economic use, the stonemasonry also plays a special role. The company still combines tradition with modern craftsmanship and teaches young people the art of limestone processing. In 2005, Europe's only stonemason school was founded in Pucišca, which still teaches the ancient Roman processing traditions. But there is also a special focus on carving; to this day the company also produces limestone sculptures.
