Jahndenkmal in Leipzig-Wahren

The Jahndenkmal in the Leipzig district of Wahren stands on a hill on the grounds of the canoe section of TSV 1893 Leipzig-Wahren. The monument is not accessible to the public in the fenced-in area, but can be viewed from a path (extended Pittlerstrasse).

The Jahndenkmal consists of a tall, square pillar made of sandstone on a stepped stone base. The column shaft tapers slightly downwards. The west side of the column shows the portrait of the gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in a bas-relief . His name is carved underneath.

The column head, designed as a flat pyramid, bears a stylized gymnast's cross , which lacks the short cross lines of the four F letters, which were removed after the Second World War .

The monument has stood in its place since the 1920s and is entered on the list of historical monuments (No. 09299001). It is the only memorial in Leipzig.

A former granite slab at the foot of the hill bore the inscription “LTC | Yellow white | im ATV Wahren ”and could refer to a local gymnastics club. Markus Cottin et al. take the 100th anniversary of the first Jahn'schen sports field in Berlin's Hasenheide in 1911 as the occasion for the memorial, whereby it was initially located on the local sports field on what was then Turnerstrasse and moved to the current location because of its relocation.
