The Van-Dam-Vanga ( Xenopirostris damii ) is a passerine bird in the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae). It is named after the Dutch naturalist DC van Dam Douwe .
features
The Van-Dam-Vanga is a compact, 23 cm large vanga strangler with a strong, laterally flattened black beak, the head and throat are black with a wide collar in white that is not closed at the neck. The back and legs are dark slate gray. The underside is white to yellowish brown. The female has white on the forehead and the ear covers.
behavior
Van Dam Vangas appear alone, in family groups or in mixed swarms of "Mixed Flocks" with other Vangas, looking in tree holes, on rotten branches and twigs for food consisting of insects , larvae, worms and small mammals. Van Dam Vangas breed monogamous between October and January, the nest is built by both.
distribution and habitat
The Van Dam Vanga is endemic to Madagascar . It is found in the tropical and subtropical dry forest or in the vicinity in circumscribed places in the west and north of Madagascar.
