The Jahnstadion (coll. RSV Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Mönchengladbach district of Rheydt in the immediate vicinity of the Grenzlandstadion .

history

The Jahnstadion was built on Nordstrasse after the groundbreaking in 1921 and was officially opened on September 22nd, 1922. In 1925 it was given a grandstand with a clubhouse and changing rooms. Originally, the stadium held around 40,000 spectators. Today there is still space for around 20,000 spectators.

Since its opening, the facility has been the home ground of Rheydter SV , which played its games in the Oberliga West here in the 1950s . For the time of the new building, the games will be played on the Mülfort sports field.

On March 25, 1978, the Bundesliga game Borussia Mönchengladbach against Fortuna Düsseldorf (3-2) took place here. The game, in which the Gladbachers were back 2-0 by the 74th minute, was followed by 27,000 spectators.

A piece of Bundesliga history has graced the RSV stadium since the mid-1990s . Since the Bökelberg Stadium was equipped with a new scoreboard, the old one was placed on Nordstrasse. Only the name Borussia was exchanged for the RSV logo . Due to financial difficulties, the board was meanwhile sold to Borussia and placed in the neighboring Grenzlandstadion for the games of the Borussia Mönchengladbach U23 team .

In 2020 the Jahnstadion is to be demolished and the “Campuspark Rheydt” will be built there by the city of Mönchengladbach. The groundbreaking ceremony for the “Campus Park Rheydt” took place in mid-March. It was the starting signal for work on the site. The demolition will create space for a new, modern sports facility with two artificial turf pitches including floodlights . A large multifunctional building and a sports campus are also being built in the vicinity. The new facility is expected to cost around EUR 2.7 million and provide ideal training and competition conditions for school, club and mass sports.
