The “2003. The Year of the Bible. ” Was an initiative of all churches that are united in the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany , as well as of Christian organizations and associations. One of the goals of the campaign was to bring the Bible into public discussion. An attempt was made to 'do this in our media society u. a. to seek cooperation with radio and television stations so that the subject of the "Bible" "reaches" as many viewers and listeners as possible.

The opening ceremony for the Year of the Bible was broadcast live by ARD on January 1st, 2003 from 12.15 to 13.00 o'clock from the new reading room of the Dresden University Library .
