Jakob Preuss (* 1975 in Berlin ) is a German documentary filmmaker .

Preuss initially studied law in Cologne and Paris and European studies in Warsaw. In 2007/2008 he was in charge of the CIS section of “ Reporters Without Borders ”.

Preuss became known as a documentary filmmaker through “The Other Chelsea”, a multi-year study of Donetsk , the mining metropolis of eastern Ukraine . The film contrasts the fate of ordinary workers with the life of a young political star from the leading pro-Russian party in the region and with that of Rinat Akhmetov , the richest and most powerful oligarch in Ukraine and supporter of then President Viktor Yanukovych . The city's successful football club, Shakhtar Donetsk , which is owned by Akhmetov, has received a luxurious new stadium from him and has risen in level through generous purchases of international players , acts as a connecting element . Preuss contrasts this with the sometimes still archaic and dangerous conditions in the Donbass coal mines . This feature film debut has won several awards, including the Max Ophüls Prize 2011 (Best Documentary), the First Steps Award and the Grimme Prize 2012.

The documentary "When Paul Came Across the Sea - Diary of an Encounter" celebrated its German premiere in the documentary film competition as part of the 38th Max Ophüls Prize 2017 film festival. In the film Preuss follows the Cameroonian Paul Nkamani in his attempts to cross the Mediterranean Sea and the bureaucracy that followed and the everyday life of a refugee in Europe. The film has received awards at numerous festivals, including the Golden Goblet Award for Best Documentary at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival .
