Christian Scholz (born September 25, 1951 in Stockholm ) is a German photographer .

Professional background

Christian Scholz spent childhood and youth in Hamburg . From 1971 to 1977 he studied German at the Free University of Berlin ; since 1985 he has lived in Zurich .

Christian Scholz came to photography as an autodidact. A decisive factor in his development as a photographer was his acquaintance with Gerd Sander , the grandson of the German photographer August Sander , who himself also worked as a photographer and gallery owner. Initially, Scholz created photographic articles for magazines or travel essays (USA, France, Switzerland, Sweden, etc.). From 1990 he carried out small and large project assignments and designed art portfolios. As part of a conceptual project, he recently realized works with the titles Tierkörper (2005), Flugkörper (2008), Menschenkörper (2010) and Klangkörper (2011). In 2013 he produced his first DVD entitled "Body Colors".

Another part of his photographic work are series of works in color and black and white as well as portraits of people in black and white. This is how work cycles emerged, for example on Pipilotti Rist (2003) or on the writer WG Sebald (2004), who had a fatal accident in 2001. Other personalities that Christian Scholz portrayed include Josef Ackermann , Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Endo Anaconda , Martin Heller , Ernst Beyeler , Donald M. Hess , Patricia Highsmith , Durs Grünbein , Michael Ringier and Gerhard Meier .

In 2011, Der Spiegel wrote about Scholz: “His credo is like the old masters: 'No tripod, no assistance, no artificial light.' Black and white, without post-processing, without a cutout. "
