Jakob Rosius (* 1598 in Biberach an der Riss ; † August 20, 1676 in Biel ) was an astronomer, mathematician, teacher and theologian.

Life

Rosius settled in Biel around 1622 after studying theology and initially worked as a schoolmaster according to the council minutes. From 1626 he published a calendar , the so-called Rosius calendar, which appeared annually well into the 19th century. Also in 1626 Rosius became a citizen of the city of Biel. In 1629 he was elected pastor of Pieterlen , but could not take up this position because the Bernese authorities rated him as atheist. He then worked as a mathematician and conducted astronomical studies.

Honors

In Biel, both a street and an adjacent square are named after him.
