Jakob Schurtanner

Jakob Schurtanner (* around 1450 in St. Gallen ; † 1526 in Teufen , Appenzell Ausserrhoden ) was a Swiss Catholic priest and Protestant Reformed pastor in Teufen and a reformer in the Appenzell region .

Life

Schurtanner probably came from St. Gallen, but he was first mentioned in writing in 1505 when he became administrator of the Berg parish . From 1507 to 1525 he was pastor in Teufen, and in 1523 he introduced Protestant teaching in his parish. But as early as 1525 he was ousted from office by the increasing number of Anabaptists .

Schurtanner is considered to be an important pioneer of the Reformation in the Appenzellerland, who was a role model for his fellow officials through his reputation and old age. Schurtanner was in close contact with the reformers Joachim Vadian in St. Gallen and Huldrych Zwingli in Zurich . Zwingli dedicated his sermon “The Shepherd”, printed in 1524, to him because he thought a lot of him and had great expectations of him.

Today only the Schurtannerstube, a room in the former Hörli rectory, reminds of the reformer Teufens.
