Jakob Steiner (cabinet maker)
Jakob Steiner (mentioned from 1510 in Basel ; † around 1553 there ) was a Swiss carpenter , picture carver and politician.
Life
Jakob Steiner did his apprenticeship with the sculptor Hans Dürr in Basel. In 1511 he acquired Basel citizenship and the guild rights of the spinning weather guild . Steiner achieved prosperity as a cabinet maker and picture carver. From 1520–1521 he was involved in the carved wooden ceiling and the furniture of the large council room (not preserved). 1539–1540 he created the drawer cabinets for the archival vault of the Basel town hall . Steiner is also credited with the so-called Erasmus chest, which Bonifacius Amerbach commissioned for the estate of Erasmus of Rotterdam .
Steiner represented the spinning weather guild 1525-1526 and 1527-1532 in the small council . In the 1530s he joined the Anabaptist movement and resigned from public office.
