Sultanate of Delhi under the Khalji Dynasty

Jalal ud din Firoz Khalji ( Urdu جلال الدین فیروز خلجی, also Jalal ud din Firoz Khilji ; † July 20, 1296 ) from the Khalji tribe of Turkish or Turkmen origin was the founder of the Khalji dynasty of the Sultanate of Delhi . He ruled from 1290 to 1296 from Kilughari, a suburb of Delhi .

biography

Jalal ud din Firoz Khalji was born in Qalat in southeastern Afghanistan; however, his year of birth is unclear. He must have lived in northern India for a long time, because the next known event is the transfer of fief to the area around Baran in the east of what is now Rajasthan by Sultan Muiz ud din Qaiqabad and his appointment as military leader. When Qaiqabad suffered a stroke, Firoz marched towards Delhi, where his sons captured Qaiqabad's still child son. The nobles of the empire recognized Firuz as their leader and Qaiqabad was assassinated.

As ruler of the Sultanate of Delhi, he installed his younger brother as well as his sons and nephews in high state offices. In 1292 his army succeeded in repelling a Mongolian army, but in 1296/7 he was murdered by his nephew Ala ud-Din Khalji .

His tomb is in Kaushambi about 12 km east of Delhi.

Succession

Ala ud-Din Khalji (r. 1296-1316) was his successor and the most important sultan of the Khalji dynasty.
