James AA Pierre

James Alexander Adolphus Pierre (born July 18, 1908 in Hartford, Grand Bassa County, † April 22, 1980 in Monrovia ) was a Liberian politician , judge at the Supreme Court of Liberia - according to the constitution of the Supreme Court of Liberia, he belonged to the group of prominent members of the Tolbert government who were executed in the April 1980 coup of Samuel K. Doe .

Life

Born in Grand Bassa County, James AA Pierre was the son of Dr. Alexander A. Pierre and Serena M. Pierre . After attending school, Pierre initially received an apprenticeship in the state finance administration in Monrovia as a tax collector. The professional perspective did not match his interests and he finished his training without a qualification. When various administrative positions were offered for the construction work on Freeport Monrovia , Pierre received a highly paid position at the US construction company Raymond Concrete Pile Company . After the completion of the port, the Liberian employees were laid off and Pierre began, following his inclinations, to pursue a legal career, for this he applied to the district judge of Grand Bassa County, he completed part-time training as a lawyer. Pierre, who was educated at Cuttington College, made a remarkable legal career starting with his first job as a defense attorney in Montserrado County. The following positions were:

  • District judge at the First Court of Justice from 1952 to 1956
  • Judge in the Supreme Court of Liberia from January 1956 to September 1964
  • Attorney General - (German: Attorney General) from 1964 to 1971
  • Chief Justice at the Supreme Court of Liberia from April 1974 to April 1980.

As attorney general, Pierre initiated fundamental reforms in the Liberian judiciary, which he was able to implement in close cooperation with the American Cornell University . Pierre became a pioneer of a modern state administration of justice, he organized the regular publication of a government gazette in order to be able to publicize the laws, regulations and decrees applicable in Liberia nationwide. The regulations and admission criteria for lawyers, judges and judicial officers were revised and tightened, Pierre was able to get the "Louis Arthur Grimes Law School" opened as a legal institute of the University of Liberia . In 1971 Liberia hosted a conference of West African justice ministers in Monrovia with the aim of establishing a West African ECOWAS court to settle regional disputes. As a symbol of the hated state power, James AA Pierre was captured by the coup plotters around Samuel K. Doe in April 1980 and sentenced to death in a court martial. His execution took place on April 22, 1980 by shooting.

James AA Pierre was married three times and had twelve children on his death.

Honors

In January 2008, the Liberian Supreme Court of Liberia established the James-AA-Pierre Judicial Institute with the aim of reforming the training of prosecutors and staff. In June 2008, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf inaugurated the Institute with a ceremony at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia.
