James Bond chases Dr. No is the sixth novel in the James Bond serieswrittenby Ian Fleming , the English original of which was first published on March 31, 1958 under the name Dr. No was released in England. In Germany, the translation in 1965 was released by the Scherz Verlag as a hardcover .

Strangways, the head of the Secret Service in Jamaica , and his secretary are killed by so-called "Chigroes", half black, half Chinese. But MI6 thinks the two ran away. M suspects that this would be an easy case and therefore sends James Bond, who has not yet fully recovered from his last hospital stay, to the island. Shortly after his arrival, Bond barely escapes multiple murder attempts. His loyal companion Quarrel suspects a connection between the assassinations and the mysterious Dr. No, a Chinese man who makes a lot of money mining guano on the island of Crab Key off the coast of Jamaica . Bond believes Strangways has too much about Dr. Nos machinations knew and therefore was eliminated.

Bond learns that a man who fled Crab Key to Jamaica was attacked by a dragon on the island and decides to find out what is behind the incident. He sails with Quarrel to Crab Key, where the two meet Honeychile "Honey" Rider, who collects mussels that are rare on the island. Despite their caution, they are discovered and used by the Dr. No dispatched Chigroes were shot at with machine guns. Bond and his companions narrowly escape the fire and the bloodhounds that were later sent out, but are then caught by the dragon, which turns out to be a large disguised swamp vehicle. Quarrel is killed with the built-in flamethrower. Bond and the girl have to surrender and take the vehicle to Dr. Nos quarters, where they are courteously received in a luxuriously furnished room of an alleged sanatorium inside a mountain. Dr. Over dinner, No tells them about his life and his plan to use expensive technology to manipulate the rocket tests of the United States with jammers, and what cruel death he has devised for his uninvited guests. While Honey is about to be eaten by crabs, Bond is sent into a supposedly fatal course in which he is supposed to show how much pain he can endure. Bond fights his way through the pipe system with the deadly dangers, is plunged into the sea, survives the fight with a giant squid and finally manages to get Dr. No surprise and kill. Honey also escapes and together they flee from Dr. Nos minions from the island.

Trivia

In this novel, Bond has to undergo a weapon change after his near fatal end in the previous adventure. The German Walther PPK replaces the .25 Beretta .

expenditure

In April 2013 a new and, for the first time, unabridged translation was published by Cross Cult publisher under the title Dr. No as a paperback. Here the "Chigroes" were translated as "Chineger".

filming

The book was used as the basis for the first film in the series, which in 1962, under the name James Bond, hunts Dr. No appeared. Sean Connery took on the role of agent for the first time.
