James Burke (boxer)
James Burke (* 8. December 1809 in London , England , † 8. January 1845 ) was an English boxer in the heavyweight division in the bare-knuckle era.
Career
On May 30, 1833, Burke competed in a particularly brutal fight against the Irish champion Simon Byrne for the English championship. The fight lasted 3 hours and 6 minutes. Byrne suffered such severe injuries in this battle that he died 3 days later. Burke was then arrested for murder, but released on July 11 of the same year.

Burke died of tuberculosis in poverty in London on January 8, 1845, at the age of only 35 .
Hall of Fame
In 1992 Burke was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in the Pioneers category .
