James Byron Gordon

James Byron Gordon (born November 2, 1822 in Wilkesboro , North Carolina , † May 18, 1864 in Richmond , Virginia ) was Brigadier General of the Confederate Army during the War of Civilizations .

Life

After studying at Emory & Henry College, Gordon worked as a businessman and farmer. In 1850 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . He began his career in the Confederate Army as a simple soldier in the Wilkes Valley Guards Regiment. There he was promoted to lieutenant and later to captain . A little later he was promoted to major in the 1st North Carolina Cavalry Regiment. This regiment was assigned to Hamptons Brigade in JEB Stuart's Cavalry Corps. In the spring of 1863, Gordons was promoted to colonel and was appointed brigade commander and on September 28 of the same year was promoted to brigadier general . Under his leadership, the brigade excelled in the skirmishes at Bethesda Church, Dumfries, and Buckland Mills. In the overland campaign of 1864, Gordon's outposts were the first to have contact with the opposing troops under General Ulysses S. Grant who wanted to cross the Rapidan.

One day after the Battle of the Yellow Tavern , Gordon was fatally wounded in an attack near Meadow Bridge.

Gordon was a relative of General John B. Gordon .
