James M. Cantor (* 2. January 1966 in Manhasset , Long Iceland , New York ) is an American sexologist and psychologist , who at the University of Toronto teaches. He became known through his research in the field of paraphilias , in particular through neuroscientific studies on pedophiles .

Act

Cantor, who also studied computer science at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , is mainly concerned with researching sexual preferences that deviate from the norm (paraphilias). He published a number of studies on pedophilia and came to the conclusion that men with a sexual preference for children are significantly more likely to be left-handed, have a lower IQ on average, and are smaller than the average population.

His studies on organic brain changes in pedophiles received greater media attention. In a sample of 127 men, he and his colleagues observed that they had a significantly lower proportion of white matter in the brain, which could be a cause for the development of corresponding tendencies. The authors concluded that a pedophile orientation manifests itself at a very early stage of brain development and cannot be changed afterwards. So far, there has been no evidence that pedophiles are less able to control their sexual behavior than non-pedophiles.

He regularly publishes articles in sex science journals, such as the Archives of Sexual Behavior or the Journal of Sex Research . Between 2010 and 2014 he was editor of Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment . In addition to his work on paraphilias, he has also published articles on topics such as hyper- or transsexuality .

Viewpoints

In 2009 Cantor was one of the authors of a paper that suggested that, in addition to the sexual preference for pre-pubescent children (pedophilia), the sexual interest in adolescents ( Hebephilia ) should also be classified as a mental disorder in the DSM-5 . This proposal is very controversial in the professional world. A new version of the definition of paraphilia, which he published together with Blanchard and Barbaree, is also controversial. Some authors like Erwin Haeberle or Charles Allen Moser criticize it as inadequate and contradicting itself.

The sexologist praises the efforts of the Virtuous Pedophiles group . Pedophiles who are abstinent deserve great credit for this; as long as it is not possible to fundamentally change a pedophile orientation, it is the members of Virped who act ethically. Those affected should receive support in being able to lead a happy and productive life even without living out their own sexuality. Such groups are also helpful for the prevention of child sexual abuse, as pedophiles can mutually encourage each other to treat their tendencies responsibly and not to commit any assault. He advocates that men with a sexual interest in children should have easier access to therapy offers before they commit attacks and, in this context, gives the German prevention project Dunkelfeld a positive assessment .
