James Chambers (horn player)

James Chambers (* 1920 in Trenton , New Jersey , † 1989 ) was an American horn player .

Chambers studied from 1938 to 1941 at the Curtis Institute with Anton Horner . After graduating, he was appointed principal horn in the Philadelphia Orchestra under Fritz Reiner . In 1946 he became principal horn in the New York Philharmonic . In the same year he received a teaching position at the Juilliard School of Music .

For health reasons he resigned as an active solo horn player in 1969, but remained with the New York Philharmonic for 18 years as a personnel manager.

In addition to a number of orchestral studies, Chambers also wrote editions of etude books and solo works.
