James Dean (astronomer)
James Dean (born November 26, 1776 in Windsor , Vermont , † January 20, 1849 in Burlington ) was an American astronomer and professor of astronomy and mathematics .
Life
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1800 and worked there from 1809 to 1814 as a professor of astronomy and mathematics. In 1811 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1821 to 1824 he worked at the University of Vermont .
In 1832 he made his proposal to Daniel Webster , the chairman of a Senate committee on the problem of the distribution of seats, of the divisor method named after him with harmonious rounding (see Dean method ).
