James Dougherty

James Dougherty (born April 12, 1921 in Los Angeles , USA , † August 15, 2005 in San Rafael , California ), called: Jim or Jimmie, was a detective of the Los Angeles Police Department and the first husband of Marilyn Monroe .

Life

Dougherty was 20 years old when he met the then unknown, sixteen-year-old Norma Jeane Baker through neighbors and married. Shortly afterwards he went on a journey for the merchant navy . He became a crew member of the B-17 bomber Liberty Lily during World War II.

Hollywood's later sex symbol was discovered by a photographer as a model and made a career. In 1946 the couple divorced by mutual agreement. Monroe later entered into two more marriages - to baseball star Joe DiMaggio and writer Arthur Miller - which were also divorced.

In 1947 he married Patricia Scoman when he joined the LAPD. From this marriage three daughters were born. The divorce was filed in 1972. After 24 years of marriage with Scoman, he performed for the third time before marrying Rita Lambert. They were married until her death in 2003.

He worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for over 25 years . He could never have become "Mister Monroe," he told the Sun Journal in 1997 . He fell in love with a small town girl and not with a movie star . Up until Monroe's death in 1962, however, he followed his ex-wife's career. In the book To Norma Jeane with Love, Jimmie he wrote down his memories of the four years they were married.

James Dougherty died in August 2005 at the age of 84. According to his stepdaughter, he was suffering from leukemia .

In 2004 director Schani Krug shot the documentary Marilyn's Man about Dougherty .
