James France

James France (* 1930 in Brussels ) is a British - Danish businessman, religious historian , art historian, Cistercian researcher and author.

life and work

The businessman

James France is the son of the British designer furniture manufacturer Charles William Fearnley France (1897–1972) and his wife Renée Mauricette France (1898–1981). From 1936 he grew up in Denmark , where his father and family had moved. France studied at the University of Oxford and graduated with a Master of Arts. In 1957 he went into his father's business (for which Finn Juhl designed furniture, among others ). After the company was sold in 1966, he was an independent businessman. In 2016 he published a book about the history of the family business France & Søn .

The Cistercian explorer

From retirement, James returned to science and worked in the field of Cistercian exploration (started in Oxford). After books on the Cistercians in Scandinavia (1992) and in medieval art (1998), he received his doctorate from the University of Roskilde in 2002 with the work The Medieval iconography of St Bernard of Clairvaux c 1135 - c 1530 (entered into the book Medieval images in 2007 of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux ). In 2012 he presented another study of the conversations in the Cistercian order. France has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA) since 1998 .
