James Frankland, 18th Baron Zouche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Assheton Frankland, 18th Baron Zouche , (born February 23, 1943 ), is a British nobleman and politician.

Origin and family environment

James Asheton Frankland descends in the female line from the old Anglo-Norman family Zouche , who had been appointed to the royal council by the crown several times since the end of the 13th century and thus became hereditary barons of the kingdom. The current 18th Baron Zouche is a descendant of the Haringworth line, who was appointed to the royal council in 1308 with William la Zouche (1276-1352) by writ of summons and who thus established this barony by writ . The title remained in the Zouche family until 1625 and then fell into abeyance , as the then 9th title holder Edward la Zouche (1556-1625) had no male heirs, so the title was suspended until 1815. In that year a female descendant of the last baron petitioned the title, which was then restituted by the crown. From then on, the title changed via the Curzon family to the Frankland family, who now have this title.

Life and career

James Assheton Frankland was born on February 23, 1943, the son of the Royal British Major Sir Thomas William Assheton Frankland, 11th Baronet (of Thirkleby) and Pamela Catherine Mabell Kay-Shuttleworth. First, after the death of his father in 1944, he inherited his baronetcy and thus became 12th Baronet Frankland, a title awarded to the family of King Charles II in 1660 . James Frankland was educated in Switzerland at the Lycee Jaccard in Lausanne . After returning to Britain, he served in the Army from 1963 to 1968 in the 15th / 19th Royal Hussars Regiment, including two years as aide-de-camp for the Governor of Tasmania . After the death of his grandmother, the 17th Baroness Zouche, in 1965, he inherited her title and hereditary seat in the House of Lords . However, he lost this seat in 1999 as a result of the House of Lords reform , as he was not one of the elected hereditary peers who remained. After leaving the House of Lords, he turned to local politics and was a member of Somerset County Council from 2009 to 2013.

James Frankland has been married to Sally Olivia Barton since 1978, with whom he has a son and a daughter.
