James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll

James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll (born April 20, 1726 in Falkirk , † July 3, 1778 in Falkirk) was a Scottish nobleman .

He was the youngest son of William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and Lady Anne Livingston. His birth name was James Boyd , from 1728 to 1746 he had the courtesy title of Lord Boyd .

In the Battle of Culloden on April 16, 1746, he fought on the side of the English, while his father fought on the side of the Scots in the battle, was captured and his title of nobility was revoked. In 1751 James succeeded in taking possession of his father's estates in and around Kilmarnock .

When his great-aunt Mary Hay, 14th Countess of Erroll died on August 19, 1758 , he inherited the title Earl of Erroll from her and changed his name to James Hay .

From 1770 to 1774 he was a Scottish Representative Peer member of the House of Lords .

In his first marriage he married Rebecca Lockhart († 1761) in 1749. After her death in 1762 he married Isabella Carr (1747–1808), with whom he had four children:

He died on July 3, 1778 in Callendar House near Falkirk.
