James Henry Gorbey

James Henry Gorbey (born July 30, 1920 in Chester , Pennsylvania , † October 24, 1977 ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Life

Gorbey served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945 , most recently with the rank of lieutenant . He then studied at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green , Ohio , where he received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1945 . At the Law School of Temple University in Philadelphia he received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1949 . Gorbey practiced as a lawyer in Chester, Pennsylvania from 1949 to 1967 . He also worked in 1950 for the Inheritance Tax Department of State and was 1951 to 1952 editor of the Delaware County Legal Journal . From 1956 to 1963 he was on the Chester City Council. From 1964 to 1967 he was mayor of the city. From 1968 to 1970 he was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County .

On November 30, 1970, he was nominated by President Richard Nixon to judge on the United States District Court for the eastern district of Pennsylvania to fill a newly created judge post for that district. On December 19, 1970, he was confirmed by the United States Senate. He was sworn in on December 21st. Gorbey held this judge's post until his death on October 24, 1977. His vacant seat was replaced by Norma Levy Shapiro.
